I titled this piece Skiagusta, a Cherokee title often interpreted as “king-like,” and associated with a high-ranking war chief. I was drawn to the idea of leadership expressed through presence rather than force. The bear advances with deliberate calm, carrying its weight and power without aggression or display. My goal was to capture authority that feels earned—quiet, grounded, and inevitable. Subtle asymmetries and surface variations suggest an individual shaped by experience rather than idealized form. Skiagusta reflects restraint as strength, and command felt before it is declared.

Morning After

With Morning After, I wanted to explore a lighter, more human moment within the powerful presence of the black bear. This large boar is cast at rest, draped casually over the plinth as though the weight of the night has finally caught up with him. His relaxed posture and unguarded sprawl suggest a bear who has indulged a bit too fully—confident, self-assured, and entirely unconcerned with appearances.

While the pose carries a subtle sense of humor, the sculpture remains grounded in mass, balance, and form. The bear’s sheer size contrasts with his moment of vulnerability, allowing the piece to sit comfortably between strength and levity. Morning After invites the viewer to pause, smile, and recognize a familiar fatigue rendered in bronze—an unguarded glimpse of character beneath the power.

The Juvenile

The Juvenile is a bronze sculpture inspired by a real encounter near the Gatlinburg Bypass, where my daughter spotted this fine young black bear and captured the photos and videos that became the foundation for the piece. At this in-between stage of life, the bear is no longer a round, cuddly cub, yet not fully grown—resulting in a slightly gangly, awkward posture that gives the sculpture its character and quiet humor. This moment of transition adds personality and authenticity, revealing a bear finding its place in the world. Both playful and observant, the piece celebrates an often-overlooked chapter in the life of one of East Tennessee’s most iconic animals.
